About the Goddess Hecate

AWARD- WINNING SOLUTIONS

Hecate Software is dedicated to developing solutions that meet - and exceed - the most demanding requirements of today s companies.

Each year, R&D Magazine honors one hundred innovative technological products, materials, processes, or software introduced to the marketplace during the previous year. Winners are selected on the basis of their importance, uniqueness, and usefulness by a panel of distinguished scientists, engineers, and researchers.

In 1990, R&D recognized the efforts of ARCO Oil & Gas Company along with those of its team members, Hecate Software and Exlog. Inc., by naming the Advanced Drillstring Analysis and Measurement System (ADAMS) as one of its 1990 Award Winners. The ability of Hecate Software to provide the quality software solutions required by today's high technology companies was duly noted.

CASE STUDY

ADAMS is a real-time system designed to monitor drillstring performance during the actual drilling of oil and gas wells. Its primary component is a digital signal processing system that provides for the spectral analysis of the vibrational characteristics associated with the drillstring.

Mechanical vibrations are detected by a series of accelerometers and strain gauges mounted on top of the drillstring assembly and converted into electrical signals that are transmitted via microwave to a portable processing system. This system, which consists of a personal computer operating in conjunction with a high-speed digital signal processor based on the TI TMS320C30, provides the substantial computing power required for real-time data acquisition, processing, and presentation.

Software developed by Hecate processes the incoming signals and provides a graphical display of the resulting data. This display allows the operator to monitor the vibration of the drillstring and to adjust drilling parameters for near optimum bit performance. Thus, costly premature damage to the drillbit and drillstring is avoided.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Hecate Software is currently involved in updating the controls for an existing plant as well as the instrumentation and automation of a new plant. Work is also underway on a field acquisition system.
